The AFSI form has been updated and may be downloaded from Inspection Templates. The form is an Excel Worksheet and maintains the familiar MS Office look and feel in common with other Flag States. The advantages of Excel include features such as filters for the ship’s types, automatic defect lists, automatic filling of inspection certificate, extra information on items, links to bulletins etc.
Nautical Inspectors don’t need to use these features and can do everything manually, but in Excel they do have the choice to make their life easier.
This gives the option to either fill the forms on a mobile phone/tablet/online computer during survey, which means little to no office work after completion, or the forms could be printed as a guideline to the surveyor on board. A deficiency list / inspection certificate etc. may also be completed manually and left on board, and forms can then be filled online on a computer in the inspector’s office after completion of the survey.
